How To Upgrade To Windows 11

Microsoft Windows 11 Upgrade

Microsoft is expected to begin the slow rollout of Windows 11 on October 5. After months of testing, Microsoft is releasing the final version of Windows 11 to its Release Preview channel today. It’s the final step before it’s released more broadly to existing devices on October 5th. However, since the new version has already been finalized, you can switch to the Release Preview in Windows 10 today and get the free Windows 11 upgrade early.

Microsoft finally confirmed the existence of Windows 11 during an event in June. This followed months of leaks and speculation from every corner of the internet. A few months later, Microsoft announced that Windows 11 would officially roll out to the public on October 5th. But you don’t have to wait that long to get the final version of the update. You can upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free today, and we’ll tell you how to do it.

In this Windows 11 guide, we will walk you through the steps of downloading the final release of the new version of the OS ahead of the October 5 release.

Windows 11 Health Check

The first thing that you are going to want to do is ensure that your computer is compatible with the Windows 11 upgrade. This has been one of the biggest controversies surrounding the release of the update. Microsoft isn’t bringing nearly as many devices into the next generation as users expected. You can download the PC Health App directly from Microsoft by clicking on this link.

Should I Upgrade to Windows 11?

The Release Preview Channel always features the final release of a new update for Windows. However, since this is still a pre-release, there is a small risk of issues that Microsoft usually patches before making the new version generally available.

Warning: This is a friendly reminder that modifying an installation of Windows can negatively impact your current setup. We recommend creating a temporary backup before proceeding as a precaution.

Will Windows 11 be a Free Upgrade?

It’s free. Microsoft announced that the free upgrade to Windows 11 will begin rolling out to eligible Windows 10 PCs and PCs that come pre-loaded with Windows 11 will start to become available for purchase. But only Windows 10 PCs that are running the most current version of Windows 10 and meet the minimum hardware specifications will be able to upgrade. You can check to see if you have the latest updates for Windows 10 in Settings/Windows Update.

Once you are sure that your computer is compatible with Windows 11, the next step is to register for the Windows Insider Program. The upgrade is only available to Insiders right now, but the program is completely free.
To enroll a computer in the Windows Insider Program to upgrade to Windows 11 before anyone else, use these steps:

  1. Confirm that your copy of Windows is properly activated. This is especially important if you recently reinstalled Windows.

  10. Click the download and install option and follow the prompts to get Windows 11 early.

Once the upgrade is complete, you can stay on the final, stable build of Windows 11 by going back to Settings > Windows Update and clicking “Stop getting preview builds.” This will stop Microsoft from pushing early versions of future updates to your Windows 11 computer. However, it’ll receive maintenance updates for as long as the release is supported.

Microsoft has also released ISO files for the final version of Windows 11, build 22000.194. You can download the win 11 update ISO file, which will allow you to clean install Windows 11, from Microsoft’s Windows Insider website.

Although you can use these instructions to upgrade as soon as Windows 11 is ready, usually, it takes months before a new version becomes fully available, and this version won’t be fully available until the second half of 2022. As a result, to avoid problems, it’s recommended to wait until the update to Windows 11 becomes available automatically through Windows Update.

How To get Windows 11 Upgrade Once It’s Generally Available

When Windows 11 is released in October to all Windows users with compatible computers, you’ll download it just like any other new version of Windows. The majority of people will go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check for updates. You’ll see a Feature update to Windows 11 if it’s available. Install by clicking the Download button.

However, note that the Windows 11 rollout will be slow — it could take months before it’s available on your device. New PCs will get the upgrade first, and all compatible devices are expected to receive it by mid-2022, depending on device age and hardware.
